Social media is not likes and shares – it’s creation [video]

What is social media for you?
Facebook? Of course.
LinkedIn? Sure.
Twitter? Yes!
Youtube? OK.
Google+? ?

In the last mastermind meeting I mentioned that I will only focus on Facebook and LinkedIn on my website. Since that is what most coaches feel social media is. But social media is much more, think blog.
I said: “I will not talk about this on this site but I will use it in my mentoring, since it is important in my strategy.”

“No!!!” They both said.
“Do mention it. That is what makes your story different.”

Social Media is about creation

One important thing many coaches seem to forget is that social media is not just about Likes, Shares and Tweets. There is much more to it. We read and share lots of photos and videos. That is one part of social media.

We read a story of our friends on Facebook and click Like or reply. Also social media.

Creation

However. One of the biggest things that social media got started was sharing and CREATION. Creating your own media at a low price (free) so everyone could do it.

We, you and I, are no longer obliged to wait for traditional media to pick up our story and share it in their channel. Or talk to a reporter or send a press release and he or she focusses on a point in your story that is not important to your target audience.

With social media, you are able to create your own channel and share your story. No need to wait for someone to cover your story. Start writing and creating.
Start today.

Maybe the reach is different. Probably you will have less viewers compared to a newspaper or television on prime time. But most of those viewers aren’t your ideal client anyway.

Build your channel

Your channel can only be build when you create content. Sharing is fun and easy. Creating media is also fun and a just bit more work.

  • You need creativity.
  • You need balls.
  • You need to stand for something.
  • You need to stand on a podium and become visible.

Even when only 2 people watch your video (and that includes your mom) or 10 people read your first post.

That is what social media is all about. You create your story. Build your channel. Make connections with your stories.

Let other people share your story.

  1. Via LinkedIn:
Great post Erno. Too often people take the soft approach to Social Media and lack to fortitude to go out on a limb and create great information. Helpful to sit back and think about how we do things in our day to day business.

  2. You are right, Erno. The social media is not only “Likes”, although I Liked your post today! Most important for me is to stand for something and to dare to share my view. I think that only if you dare to share what you think (how bold and out of ordinary it may seem) you are of service to your readers and followers. There are too many average people and flunkies, so being different helps your clients!
